Here’s some release dates by Sony for their highly anticipated PS3:
100,000 units in Japan on 11 November 2006
400,000 units in US on 17 November 2006
Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and Australasia will be on March 2007.
On top of that, Sony estimate that they will have 2 – 2.4 million PS3 units released in North America & Japan by 31 December 2006. Down from their initial plans to release 4 million by that time. However, Sony still estimates sales to be 6 million units by 31 March 2007.
It seems that the new blue laser diodes installed in all PS3s has never been mass produced before, and is giving Sony a few production teething problems.
Sony is pushing for the new Blu-ray technology(hence the blue laser diodes) that enable Blu-ray discs to hold 50GB on a single layer. However even as far back as February this year, Sony hinted that there would be potential delays from production issues with Blu-ray.
The delays, as with everything else in today’s connected world, has some devastating effects on third-party publishers. Many game publishers relying on the release of the PS3 console for their PS3 games have had to downgrade their sales estimates due to the delay in the launch of the PS3.
