3D Monitors Have Arrived

3d_monitors Many electronics companies today are developing, and in some cases already selling, monitors that produce 3D pictures without the inconvienence of those tacky 3D glasses! If you stand in front of the "sweet spot" of one of these monitors, you become immersed in the 3D viewing environment. These companies include Philips, Toshiba, Sanyo and ColorLink - keep an eye out for press releases from them.

The 3D monitors create two types of images to achieve a 3D effect and trick the brain into believing a sense of distance between the two images. From a technical point of view, this is becoming more achievable with the rise of higher definition televisions. Movies, television and games will bring a whole new dimension of entertainments...literally!

Hurricane Katrina: Assessing Damage Using Google Earth

Katrina_1 As you know, the catastrophic hurricane that is Katrina has caused devastating damage to the South-Eastern parts of the United States. You may also know that the storm has breached some levees in New Orleans, Louisiana, causing extensive flooding of the city.

As mentioned in my previous blog, there are many uses of Google Earth. One such use is to add 'Image Overlays'. Several Google Earth users have suggested that with the general public's participation, aerial image data can be collaboratively laid out to form a larger picture of the damage done, especially to the city of New Orleans. Click here for more details.

I've attached a sample 'Placemark' of the damage done in one particlar area (which is taken from the link above): Download 90791-MSNBCRisingFearsGE.kmz . If you already have Google Earth, you can download this small file and run it.
